I formed a nonprofit organization? Is anything else required?

I filed Articles of Incorporation with the Minnesota Office of the Secretary of State. I also have Bylaws. I obtained a tax ID (EIN) from the IRS. Do I need anything more?

In general, nonprofit organizations soliciting contributions must file an “Initial Registration / Annual Report Form” and an annual report with the Minnesota Attorney General.  You can find these forms here: http://www.ag.state.mn.us/charities/charityforms.asp.  This is required by Minnesota Statutes section 309.53.  However, there are exceptions for small organizations that meet the exemptions (exclusions) noted in Minnesota Statutes section 309.515.

You may also wish to seek 501(c)(3) status by filing IRS Form 1023 with the IRS. Learn more: How to Start a Nonprofit Organization.

Finally, you should advise your Board of Directors regarding their duties to the organization.

Of course, these are just a few of the primary considerations. Starting and operating an nonprofit organization is not easy, so you should retain a nonprofit attorney to advise you on the needs of your particular organization.
