§ 10.60 — Public Websites and Publications

Plain-Language Summary

Government websites and publications funded with public money must serve the public purpose of providing information about the agency's duties or helping people access public services—they cannot be used to promote individual officials. Government sites cannot link to political candidate websites, party sites, or political committees except for specific election-related sites. Violations are not criminal or subject to civil fines, but agencies and political subdivisions may adopt stricter standards.

Practical Notes
This law prevents government websites from becoming campaign tools for elected officials seeking re-election. Officials cannot use public funds to send out promotional materials that highlight their personal accomplishments in a political way. Citizens who see government websites being used for political self-promotion can complain to oversight authorities, though the law itself does not provide a private right to sue.
