§ 103D.271 — Procedure for Terminating Watershed District

Plain-Language Summary

This section explains how to shut down a watershed district. At least 25% of resident owners must sign a petition saying the district no longer serves the public interest. A termination petition cannot be filed in the first five years after the district is created, and not more than once every five years after that.

Practical Notes
Terminating a watershed district requires signatures from at least 25% of resident owners, a public hearing, and a board determination that the district is no longer needed. The district stops existing when the termination order is filed with the Secretary of State. Metropolitan-area districts can also be terminated under sections 103B.221 and 103B.225.
