§ 120B.122 — Dyslexia Specialist

Plain-Language Summary

This section requires the Minnesota Department of Education to employ a dyslexia specialist who provides technical assistance to schools on dyslexia and related reading disorders. The specialist serves as the primary source of support for teachers and administrators working with students who have dyslexia, helps improve professional awareness, and makes recommendations consistent with the Read Act. The specialist must be highly trained in evidence-based, multisensory, structured literacy interventions.

Practical Notes
Schools identifying students with dyslexia or risk characteristics for dyslexia should contact the Department of Education’s dyslexia specialist for guidance. The specialist can help districts develop appropriate interventions and align practices with the Read Act screening and intervention requirements under sections 120B.12 and 120B.123. Districts cannot rely solely on informal identification methods — approved screeners must be used.
