§ 120B.20 — Parental Curriculum Review

Plain-Language Summary

This section requires every school district to have a procedure allowing parents, guardians, or adult students to review the content of instructional materials before they are provided to students. If someone objects to the content, the school must make reasonable arrangements for alternative instruction. The school board does not have to pay for parent-provided alternatives, and students cannot be penalized for participating in alternative instruction — though schools may still grade the work the student does.

Practical Notes
Parents who want to review curriculum materials should ask their district for the written curriculum review procedure — every district is required by law to have one. If a parent’s objection is not addressed by the school’s alternative offering, the parent may provide their own alternative. Students who arrange for alternative instruction under this section are legally protected from academic penalties, but their teachers may still evaluate the quality of the work actually produced.
