§ 120B.22 — Violence Prevention Education

Plain-Language Summary

This section encourages school districts to integrate violence prevention programs into their existing K-12 curriculum. A strong program should teach nonviolent conflict resolution, personal safety, how to prevent harassment and hazing, and how to identify and respond to child abuse. Districts are also encouraged to provide staff training on mandatory reporting and responding to disclosures of abuse. The commissioner can assist any district that requests help developing a program, and districts may accept public and private funding for these efforts.

Practical Notes
Violence prevention programs under this section are encouraged, not strictly required, but districts that apply for grants under section 120B.23 must have an active program. Staff training on mandatory reporting obligations under chapter 260E is a legally distinct and mandatory requirement separate from this section. Nonpublic schools that participate in a district’s program can receive help from the Department of Education at a neutral site. Districts can use state grant funds (under section 120B.23) or accept private funding to support these programs.
