§ 120B.232 — Character Development Education

Plain-Language Summary

This section encourages school districts to integrate character education into existing curriculum and programs, covering qualities like truthfulness, self-discipline, patience, respect for others, and peacemaking. Character education is described as a shared responsibility of parents, teachers, and the community. Programs may include a voluntary element based on the history and values of Congressional Medal of Honor recipients. Teachers who complete approved character development training may receive continuing education credit.

Practical Notes
Character education programs are encouraged, not required, so districts have flexibility in how and whether they implement them. The commissioner provides assistance on request for curriculum development. Districts should use available federal funds first before seeking private funding for these programs. Licensed teachers may earn up to six clock hours of continuing education credit for completing Medal of Honor-based character education training, with local relicensure committee approval.
