§ 127A.47 — Payments to Resident and Nonresident Districts

Plain-Language Summary

This section sets the rules for which school district receives state education aid when a student attends school outside their home district. In general, aid follows the student to the school they attend. Special rules apply for students of divorced or separated parents who share custody across district lines, and for districts that have no schools of their own.

Practical Notes
When a student attends school in a different district from where they live, this section determines which district gets the state aid. The serving district usually gets the money, but there are exceptions for special education, open enrollment, and custody situations. Serving districts must notify resident districts of nonresident students within 60 days.
