§ 13.355 — Social Security Numbers

Plain-Language Summary

This section restricts how government entities can collect, use, and display Social Security numbers. Entities generally cannot require your SSN unless authorized by law, and cannot publicly display it.

Practical Notes
A government agency cannot demand your Social Security number unless a specific law requires it. They cannot print your full SSN on any materials mailed to you or display it publicly. If an agency asks for your SSN, ask them to cite the law that requires it.
