§ 142A.40 — Legal Referral and Assistance Grants

Plain-Language Summary

This section directs the commissioner to give grants to nonprofit legal services programs that help people with emergency or chronic health conditions who cannot get medical assistance because of their legal status. The grantees work with hospitals and safety net providers to connect these individuals with health care resources.

Practical Notes
This program helps people who are not currently eligible for public health care programs but might become eligible with legal help. The legal services are provided based on financial need (indigency). If you have a serious health condition and need help understanding your eligibility for health care programs, these grantees may be able to assist you.
