§ 142F.20 — Family Assets for Independence

Plain-Language Summary

The Minnesota Family Assets for Independence initiative helps low-income families build savings by providing matching funds for savings deposited in designated family asset accounts. Funds saved can be used for education, housing, vehicles, emergencies, and small business development. Community action agencies and other approved fiduciary organizations administer the individual savings accounts.

Practical Notes
This program is designed to help low-income families build wealth rather than just meet immediate needs. Participants open a savings account through an approved fiduciary organization and receive matching funds from the state when they save toward approved goals. If you are interested in participating, contact a local community action agency in your area to find out if the program is currently accepting new participants.
