§ 142G.12 — Eligibility; Minnesota Residence

Plain-Language Summary

To get MFIP, you must be a Minnesota resident. This means you or your child must have lived in the state for at least 30 days in a row with plans to stay. Time spent in a domestic violence shelter counts toward the 30-day requirement.

Practical Notes
The county can waive the 30-day residency rule if you would face unusual hardship, such as having no shelter or food. If you lived in Minnesota before and are returning, you may also be considered a resident. People who move to Minnesota with a job or to look for work meet the residency requirement.
