§ 144G.64 — Training in Dementia, Mental Illness, and De-escalation Required

Plain-Language Summary

All assisted living facility staff must complete dementia and mental health training. Direct care staff must complete eight hours of dementia training and two hours of mental illness and de-escalation training within their first 160 work hours. Supervisors must complete these hours within 120 work hours. Annual refresher training is also required. Training covers Alzheimer's disease, communication skills, crisis resolution, suicide prevention, and de-escalation techniques.

Practical Notes
All assisted living staff — including housekeeping, food service, and maintenance — must receive dementia and mental health training. Direct care staff cannot provide care unsupervised until they complete this training. Facilities must provide written information about their training program to residents and families who ask. If you are concerned a facility is not providing required training, report it to the Department of Health.
