§ 144G.81 — Additional Requirements: Assisted Living Facilities With Dementia Care; Assisted Living Facilities With Secured Dementia Care Units

Plain-Language Summary

Assisted living facilities with dementia care must meet all standard physical environment requirements plus additional ones. They must assess and document safety risks on and around the property. All secured dementia care units must comply with a specific edition of the Life Safety Code and have an awake, physically present staff member in the secured unit 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Practical Notes
If a family member with dementia lives in a secured dementia care unit, there must always be an awake staff member physically present in that unit — this is not optional. The facility must assess and mitigate safety risks specific to residents with dementia, such as elopement hazards. Sprinkler systems must be installed in all dementia care facilities by August 1, 2029.
