§ 145A.08 — Assessment of Costs; Tax Levy Authorized

Plain-Language Summary

This section makes persons with communicable diseases — or their dependents or spouses — financially responsible for the reasonable cost of care that a government unit paid to control their disease. It also authorizes local governments to assess the costs of public health enforcement actions against property owners who do not comply with public health orders.

Practical Notes
If a community health board pays for care or enforcement related to your communicable disease, you may be billed for those costs. Similarly, if you own property and a government agency must take enforcement action to address a public health hazard on your property, you can be assessed the cost of that action. Unpaid assessments can become liens on property.
