§ 147.38 — Interstate Medical Licensure Compact

Plain-Language Summary

Minnesota has joined the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact, which lets qualified doctors get licensed in multiple states through a faster process. The compact creates an Interstate Commission to manage the system. Doctors must meet strict eligibility requirements including no criminal history, no prior discipline, and board certification. If a doctor's license is revoked in one compact state, licenses in all other compact states are automatically affected.

Practical Notes
The compact provides an expedited pathway to multi-state licensure but does not replace traditional licensing. Physicians must designate a state of principal license and meet stringent eligibility criteria, including having never been subject to discipline or convicted of any felony, gross misdemeanor, or crime of moral turpitude. Disciplinary action in any compact state can trigger automatic suspension in all other compact states.
