§ 151.21 — Substitution

Plain-Language Summary

This section governs drug substitution (generic substitution) in Minnesota. When a doctor prescribes a brand-name drug, the pharmacist may substitute a less expensive generic version unless the doctor or patient specifically requests the brand name. The pharmacist must inform the patient about the substitution.

Practical Notes
When you get a prescription filled, the pharmacist may give you a generic version instead of the brand name to save you money. Your doctor can write ‘dispense as written’ to require the brand name. You can also request the brand name, but you may pay more.
