§ 152.125 — Intractable Pain

Plain-Language Summary

Protects doctors, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants from discipline for prescribing controlled substances to treat severe, ongoing pain (intractable pain), as long as they follow proper procedures including a patient-provider agreement. Prohibits forced dose reductions based solely on dosage thresholds.

Practical Notes
If you have chronic pain that cannot be cured, your doctor can prescribe opioids or other controlled substances without fear of losing their license, provided they document the treatment properly. Your doctor cannot be forced to cut your medication dose just to meet a number. Pharmacists and insurers also cannot refuse to fill a valid prescription based solely on dosage.
