§ 15A.082 — Compensation Council

Plain-Language Summary

This section creates the Compensation Council, which meets every other year to set salaries for constitutional officers and heads of state agencies. The council has members appointed by the chief justice, the governor, and legislative leaders. It must consider comparable pay in government and the private sector when setting salaries.

Practical Notes
The Compensation Council sets pay for the governor, attorney general, and major agency heads. Salary increases take effect the following July 1 unless the legislature acts to change them. Members of the council who are appointed by the governor cannot vote on the governor’s salary, to avoid a conflict of interest.
