§ 168.041 — Impounding Registration Plates

Plain-Language Summary

When a person is convicted of driving after their license was suspended, revoked, or canceled, the court must order the license plates on their vehicle surrendered. If someone else owned the vehicle, the plates are only taken if the owner knew the driver's license was invalid and still gave permission to drive.

Practical Notes
Losing your plates means the vehicle cannot be legally driven at all. No new plates will be issued until the driver’s license is reinstated. Other household members who need the vehicle may apply for new plates.
