§ 168.31 — Registration Tax Payment

Plain-Language Summary

Registration tax is due when you first start using your vehicle on public roads, and it must be renewed each year. If your annual registration tax is more than $400, you can pay it in three installments. Missing an installment payment means you cannot drive the vehicle until all remaining taxes and penalties are paid in full.

Practical Notes
You can pay ahead. For most cars on the monthly registration system, payment is due 45 days before your registration period starts. Late payments result in daily and monthly penalties.
