§ 168A.152 — Use and Certification of Title; Inspection Fee

Plain-Language Summary

This section explains what a salvage title allows and what it does not. A salvage title lets the holder possess, transport, and sell the vehicle, but it cannot be used to register the vehicle for road use. To convert a late-model salvage vehicle to a 'prior salvage' title (which allows registration), the vehicle must pass an inspection and the owner must pay a $35 inspection fee. Salvage vehicle purchasers must keep the salvage title available for inspection.

Practical Notes
Buyers of salvage vehicles who want to rebuild and register them for road use must go through the inspection process and get a ‘prior salvage’ branded title first. The $35 inspection fee is in addition to normal title fees. A vehicle with a ‘prior salvage’ title can be registered and driven legally, but the brand follows the vehicle permanently and affects insurance rates and resale value.
