§ 168B.16 — Flashing Light on Tow Truck

Plain-Language Summary

All tow trucks in Minnesota must be equipped with flashing or intermittent red and amber lights, approved by the commissioner of public safety, placed on the vehicle's dome at the highest visible point. The red light is only for emergency situations when the tow truck is working near traffic. The amber light can be displayed when the tow truck is moving a disabled vehicle on a road.

Practical Notes
The flashing light requirement is a basic safety rule designed to protect both tow truck operators and other drivers from accidents when tow trucks are working on or near roadways. The different rules for red versus amber lights reflect the different levels of urgency—red means there is an active emergency situation, while amber just means a vehicle is being transported. Tow truck operators who do not comply with these lighting requirements can face fines and may create liability if a lighting violation contributes to an accident.
