2025 Session Last amended: 1974 session

§ 169.022 — Uniform Application

Plain-Language Summary

Minnesota's traffic laws apply the same way everywhere in the state. Cities and counties cannot make traffic rules that conflict with state law, and if a local rule covers the same topic as a state law, the penalty must be the same.

Practical Notes
This means you can expect the same basic traffic rules whether you are in Minneapolis, Duluth, or a small town. A city cannot create harsher penalties for the same traffic offense than what state law allows.
