§ 169.19 — Turning, Starting, and Signaling

Plain-Language Summary

This section explains the rules for turning, starting from a parked position, and using turn signals in Minnesota. Right turns should be made close to the right curb, left turns from near the center line. You must signal before turning, changing lanes, or starting from a parked position.

Practical Notes
When this applies: Whenever you turn, change lanes, or pull away from a parked position on a Minnesota road. Who this affects: All drivers. Key points: For right turns, stay close to the right curb. For left turns on a two-way road, approach from near the center line. U-turns are not allowed on curves or hilltops where visibility is less than 1,000 feet. You must signal at least 100 feet before turning. When a road has a bicycle lane, you must signal and move into the bike lane before making your turn, yielding to bicyclists. You cannot start moving from a parked position unless it is safe to do so.
