§ 169.443 — Safety of School Children; Bus Driver's Duties

Plain-Language Summary

School bus drivers must turn on amber warning lights at least 100 feet before stopping (300 feet in zones over 35 mph). When stopped, they must extend the stop arm and activate red lights. They cannot turn off the red lights until all children are seated or have safely crossed the road.

Practical Notes
School bus drivers follow strict rules to protect children. If you see amber lights flashing on a school bus, it is about to stop – slow down and prepare to stop. Once red lights and the stop arm are out, you must stop.
