2025 Session Last amended: 2021 session

§ 16B.24 — General Authority

Plain-Language Summary

This section gives the commissioner of administration broad power over state buildings and property. The commissioner runs and maintains the Capitol and other state buildings, assigns office space to agencies, handles building repairs, disposes of old buildings, leases space, and sets rules about smoking in state buildings. The state must also consider child care space and recycle fluorescent lamps.

Practical Notes
State agencies looking for office space must work through the commissioner of administration. Smoking is banned in state-managed buildings except designated areas in veterans homes. Before leasing private space, the state must first check if vacant public buildings are available. Fitness and wellness classes can be offered in state buildings, but participants waive liability claims against the state.
