§ 176.1351 — Managed Care

Plain-Language Summary

Employers can use a certified managed care plan to coordinate medical treatment for injured workers. The plan must meet state standards for quality, convenience, and access. Workers keep the right to see their own doctor if that doctor agrees to work with the managed care plan.

Practical Notes
When this applies: When an employer enrolls in a certified managed care plan for workers’ compensation medical treatment. Who this affects: Injured workers whose employers use a managed care plan. Key points: Managed care plans must be certified by the commissioner and meet standards for quality, access, and cost control. You can see a doctor outside the plan if that doctor has your medical records and agrees to refer you to the plan for additional treatment. You have the right to change healthcare providers within the plan at least once. Emergency treatment from any provider is always covered. The plan cannot exclude any type of healthcare provider.
