§ 178.044 — Determination of Apprentice Wages

Plain-Language Summary

This section sets rules for how apprentice wages are calculated. Apprentices may not work more hours per week than the law or their employer's standard work schedule allows. Overtime rules apply to apprentices the same way they apply to other workers. For non-union apprentices, wages are based on the state prevailing wage rate for the same trade and county.

Practical Notes
Employers must pay apprentices overtime at the same rate increase as journeyworkers in the same industry. For non-union programs, tying apprentice wages to the prevailing wage rate ensures apprentices earn market rates as they progress. Sponsors whose trade has no prevailing wage determination must negotiate with the Division of Apprenticeship to set the journeyworker rate for their wage schedule.
