§ 179.86 — Packinghouse Workers Bill of Rights

Plain-Language Summary

This is the Packinghouse Workers Bill of Rights. It requires meatpacking and poultry employers to give workers safe equipment, explain their rights and job details in their own language, and provide information about pay, benefits, hazards, and workers' compensation. The Department of Labor and Industry must help employers follow these rules. Workers who are harmed by violations can sue for damages, and employers face fines of $400 to $1,000 per violation.

Practical Notes
If you work in meatpacking or poultry processing, your employer must explain your rights in your native language when you start the job. This includes your right to organize, your right to a safe workplace, and your workers’ compensation coverage. If your employer fails to do this, you can sue for at least $1,000 per violation (or $1,400 for intentional violations). The Department of Labor and Industry provides a standard form employers can use.
