2025 Session Last amended: 2025 session

§ 17A.04 — Licenses

Plain-Language Summary

This section sets the licensing requirements for livestock market agencies, public stockyards, livestock dealers, livestock dealer agents, meat packing companies, and their agents. Licenses are annual and expire December 31, and a separate license is required for each business location. Licenses must be posted conspicuously at the place of business.

Practical Notes
Every livestock market agency, dealer, stockyard, and meat packing company must obtain an annual license from the Commissioner of Agriculture. If you operate at multiple locations, you need a separate license for each. Operating without a valid license is unlawful under section 17A.07 and can result in criminal charges.
