§ 181.14 — Payment to Employees Who Quit or Resign; Settlement of Disputes

Plain-Language Summary

When an employee quits or resigns, the employer must pay all earned wages by the first regular payday after the employee's last day of work (but no later than 20 calendar days). If the employer does not pay on time and the employee makes a written demand, the employer owes a penalty of up to 15 days' pay.

Practical Notes
When this applies: Any time an employee voluntarily leaves a job in Minnesota. Who this affects: All employees who quit or resign. Key points: Your employer must pay you by the next regular payday, or within 20 calendar days, whichever comes first. Migrant workers must be paid within three days. If your employer handled money or property, they have 10 days to audit before paying. Employers cannot deduct money from your final paycheck for lost or damaged property except in limited circumstances.
