§ 182.6525 — Crane Operation

Plain-Language Summary

Anyone who operates a crane with a lifting capacity of five tons or more on a construction site must have a valid crane operator certificate from a nationally recognized program. The certificate must be renewed every five years. Employers and general contractors can be cited for violations.

Practical Notes
Crane operators on construction sites need certification, but there are several exceptions, including railroad workers, utility workers, farmers, military personnel, and people using cranes for personal use. Operating without certification is treated as a serious violation under Minnesota OSHA.
