§ 200.031 — Determination of Residence

Plain-Language Summary

This section explains how to determine where a person lives for voting purposes. Your residence is generally where your home is, where your family lives, or where you usually sleep. You do not lose your residence by temporarily living somewhere else, and you do not gain a new one just by moving somewhere temporarily. If your home is destroyed by fire or a natural disaster, you keep your residence there if you plan to return.

Practical Notes
Residence for voting is based on intent and physical presence. College students, people with multiple homes, and those temporarily away for work should pay close attention to these rules. Nursing home and veterans’ home residents vote in the precinct where the facility is located.
