2025 Session Last amended: 2013 session

§ 204C.25 — Disposition of Ballots

Plain-Language Summary

After counting is done, all counted, defective, and blank ballots are placed in envelopes, sealed, and signed by election judges. The number of ballots and precinct information must be written on each envelope. Spoiled ballots are returned separately along with unused ballots to the county auditor or clerk.

Practical Notes
The sealing process preserves the integrity of voted ballots in case a recount or contest is needed. The signed seals create a tamper-evident chain of custody from the polling place to the county auditor.
