§ 204C.32 — Canvass of State Primaries

Plain-Language Summary

The county canvassing board meets two or three days after the state primary to publicly review and certify election returns. They report vote totals, same-day registrations, and nominees for each office. The county auditor sends a certified report to the secretary of state. The State Canvassing Board meets seven days after the primary to certify statewide results.

Practical Notes
After a primary election, the county canvass must be completed by the third day. The certified report is sent to the secretary of state by express mail. Nominees receive a notice of nomination from either the county auditor (for county offices) or the secretary of state (for state offices).
