§ 214.078 — Protection From Conversion Therapy

Plain-Language Summary

Mental health practitioners and professionals are prohibited from performing conversion therapy on anyone under 18 or on vulnerable adults. Conversion therapy means practices that try to change a person's sexual orientation or gender identity. Violating this ban is considered unprofessional conduct and can lead to disciplinary action by the practitioner's licensing board.

Practical Notes
This law protects minors and vulnerable adults from conversion therapy in Minnesota. Counseling that supports gender transition or helps with identity exploration is not prohibited. If you believe a mental health provider has performed conversion therapy on a minor or vulnerable adult, you can file a complaint with the provider’s licensing board.
