§ 216A.03 — Public Utilities Commission

Plain-Language Summary

The Public Utilities Commission is made up of five members appointed by the governor with the advice and consent of the senate. No more than three members can belong to the same political party. The commission has authority to regulate public utilities in Minnesota.

Practical Notes
The bipartisan makeup of the commission (no more than 3 of 5 from the same party) is designed to prevent political bias in utility regulation. Commission members serve staggered six-year terms to provide continuity.
