2025 Session Last amended: 1986 session

§ 244.07 — Furloughs

Plain-Language Summary

The Commissioner of Corrections can grant inmates temporary furloughs of up to five days to travel within Minnesota. Furloughs can be used for family needs, health care, or preparing to return to society. An inmate can receive no more than three furloughs in a 12-month period. There is no limit on furloughs granted for medical care not available at the prison.

Practical Notes
Furloughs are only granted when consistent with public interest and under rules set by the commissioner. The three-furlough-per-year limit does not apply to health care furloughs when the needed treatment is not available at the correctional facility. This applies to inmates regardless of whether their offense was committed before or after May 1, 1980.
