§ 253B.04 — Voluntary Treatment and Admission Procedures

Plain-Language Summary

This section explains how a person can voluntarily enter a treatment facility for mental health, developmental disability, or chemical dependency treatment. Anyone age 16 or older can request admission. The section also explains when a person can be admitted with a parent or guardian's consent and how a patient can leave.

Practical Notes
If you want to seek treatment voluntarily, a facility cannot turn you away just because you do not meet the standard for involuntary commitment. You also have the right to leave by giving written notice, though the facility may hold you for up to 72 hours after your request.
