§ 253B.13 — Duration of Continued Commitment

Plain-Language Summary

This section sets the time limits for how long a commitment can last. After the initial period, the court can extend commitment for up to one year at a time if the facility shows the patient still needs treatment. The patient has the right to a hearing before each extension.

Practical Notes
A commitment does not last forever. The court must review and renew it periodically. You have the right to a hearing each time the facility asks the court to extend your commitment.
