§ 253D.35 — Aftercare Services

Plain-Language Summary

The Minnesota Sex Offender Program is required to provide supervision, aftercare services, and case management for people who are discharged or provisionally discharged from commitment. Before someone leaves the program, the executive director must develop a plan covering medical and mental health care, housing, financial support, employment assistance, and other needs to help the person successfully rejoin the community.

Practical Notes
Aftercare planning is a critical part of the transition from the Minnesota Sex Offender Program. Committed persons approaching provisional or full discharge should actively participate in developing their aftercare plan. The plan must be in place before discharge and the program must actively assist with finding housing, employment, and ongoing treatment — not just create a plan on paper.
