§ 259.27 — Notification of Death or Terminal Illness

Plain-Language Summary

Requires adoption agencies to notify birth parents if an adopted child dies and to notify adoptive parents or adult adopted persons if a birth parent dies, provided the parties have registered their desire to be notified. Also allows parties to request notification of terminal illness.

Practical Notes
If you are a birth parent who placed a child for adoption, you can register with the placing agency to be notified if the child dies or is terminally ill. Adoptive parents and adopted persons age 19 or older can similarly register to be notified about a birth parent’s death or terminal illness. Notification of death must be delivered in person, not by mail.
