2025 Session Last amended: 2017 session

§ 274.01 — Board of Appeal and Equalization

Plain-Language Summary

The town board or city council serves as the local board of appeal and equalization, where property owners can challenge their property tax assessments. Meetings must be held between April 1 and May 31, and the public must receive at least ten days' notice. The board reviews property values and classifications and can make changes.

Practical Notes
If you believe your property’s tax value or classification is wrong, the local board of appeal and equalization is your first stop. Attend the meeting in person and bring evidence supporting the value you believe is correct, such as comparable sales or an appraisal. Watch for the published meeting notice each spring.
