§ 278.03 — Payment of Tax

Plain-Language Summary

While your property tax appeal is pending, you must still pay a portion of the disputed tax. For real property, you must pay 50% by May 16 and 50-80% of the remaining balance by October 16. If paying would cause hardship, you can ask the court for permission to continue without paying. Failure to pay on time automatically dismisses your case.

Practical Notes
Do not assume that filing a tax appeal means you can skip tax payments. Missing the payment deadlines will automatically dismiss your case. However, you can get your case reinstated by paying the full tax plus interest and penalty within one year of the dismissal. Agricultural homestead properties get an extra month, with the second deadline being November 16.
