2025 Session Last amended: 1986 session

§ 278.12 — Refunds of Overpayment

Plain-Language Summary

If you win your property tax appeal and have overpaid, the county auditor must issue a refund warrant or, with your consent, a certificate that can be used to pay future taxes. The refund amount is charged back to the state and taxing districts in proportion to their share of the original tax.

Practical Notes
You have two options for your refund: a cash payment by warrant or a tax credit certificate you can apply to future property taxes. The credit certificate option may be faster. The cost of your tax reduction is shared among all the taxing districts, including the state, county, city, and school district, in proportion to their share of the original levy.
