§ 299A.12 — Wheelchair Securement Device

Vehicles used to transport wheelchair users must have securement devices that meet federal Americans with Disabilities Act standards. The devices must be installed following the manufacturer's instructions and kept in working order. A vehicle can only carry as many wheelchair users as it has approved securement devices.

Practical Notes
Operators must ensure securement devices comply with ADA requirements and federal regulations (49 CFR 38.23). Each wheelchair must be secured before the vehicle moves. Vehicles cannot carry more wheelchair passengers than the number of approved securement devices installed.
