§ 34A.02 — Adulteration

This section defines what makes meat and poultry products adulterated. A product is adulterated if it contains harmful substances, was prepared in unsanitary conditions, contains unapproved additives, or its container is made of harmful materials. Meat from diseased or dying animals is also adulterated.

Practical Notes
Selling adulterated meat or poultry is illegal and can result in penalties. Processors must ensure their products are free from contaminants, made in clean facilities, and from healthy animals. Adulterated products can be seized and destroyed.
