§ 352B.02 — State Patrol Retirement Fund

Plain-Language Summary

This section creates the State Patrol retirement fund and sets contribution rates. Members contribute 15.4% of salary (as of July 2020). Employers contribute 23.1% of salary, plus a supplemental contribution of 7% that continues until the fund is fully funded at 110% for three straight years. The fund is managed by the Minnesota State Retirement System and audited by the legislative auditor.

Practical Notes
State Patrol members have significantly higher contribution rates than general state employees, reflecting the enhanced benefits of the plan. The supplemental employer contribution was added to help close the fund’s unfunded liability. If you are a member, 15.4% of every paycheck goes to the retirement fund.
