§ 352B.101 — Application for Disability Benefit

Plain-Language Summary

Members claiming a disability benefit must file a written application with the retirement system, along with medical or psychological evidence. Benefits start accruing the day after disability begins or the last day of pay, but no earlier than 180 days before the application is filed. Members seeking duty disability for psychological conditions must first complete the treatment process under section 352B.102.

Practical Notes
File your disability application as soon as possible because benefits can only go back 180 days before filing. If your disability is psychological, there is an additional treatment program you must complete before qualifying for duty disability benefits.
